The Road to the Universe starts from the homepage
Aalamga Jol is inspired by the Kyrgyz idiom: “aalamga jol ayyldan bashtalat.” Driving through Kyrgyzstan, you’ll encounter this makal again and again at the point between settlements and highways, meaning, “the road to the universe begins from the village.” Our understanding of the world is deeply influenced by our environment and the people who shape us, and the world really does connect to, and start from, and end in the village.
While the majority of humans now live in urban spaces, and cities appear to be the hubs of modern existence, much of what sustains us—our food, water, and energy—ultimately comes from places that might seem peripheral but are in fact central to our survival: rural spaces and developing regions—the village. From a broader lens, as the world globalizes, humanity is becoming more of a “global village“, as McLuhan describes it, as the flow of people, ideas, goods, money, and pollution transcend boundaries and unite people in common experiences, and increasingly shared and yet somehow diverse worldviews. The road to the world really does start from the village, but it also converges to the village.
This site explores a wide range of geographical topics, from mountains to valleys, deserts to rainforests, cities to villages, and everything in between. The goal is to make geography accessible, with a special focus on Kyrgyz audiences. Most content has been adapted from lessons I’ve taught over the years in my geography classes.
While some sections are more developed than others, I hope every resource here proves informative, engaging, and thought-provoking.
Feel free to navigate the menu to access material based on past lesson plans and extension content at your convenience. Happy exploring!
